Population Pyramids Help
Population pyramids show the distribution of males and females by age groups.

The horizontal bars represent the number of males or females within each age cohort.

Population pyramids reflect the underlying demographic processes of fertility (births), mortality (deaths), and migration. The base of the population pyramid reflects fertility: a wide base reflects high fertility (a high proportion of the population is in the younger age categories); a narrow base reflects low fertility. The overall shape of the pyramid reflects mortality: a steeply eroded pyramid with a narrow peak reflects high mortality (a lower proportion of the population is in the older age categories); a more rectangular-shaped pyramid reflects low mortality.
